End of the Season Pizza Party
Good morning. I am unsure when our end of the season pizza party is going to be. There is going to be a fall sports awards, Dr. Sippy is paying for it. Mr. Velardi is determining a new date for the fall sports awards since there will be a conflict with other sports on the original date. Once a date is set for the fall sports awards, I'll schedule our annual end of the season pizza party.
In the mean time, if you have any pictures that you would like included in the annual slide show send them to me before Thanksgiving. You can give me CDs, email the pictures, or send me a link to a site that contains the pictures. My e-mail is mattloi@yahoo.com. Thank you and I'll see all of you at the pizza party.

Time Trial and Course Update
Despite the cold and the rain, we ran our annual Apple Pie Time Trial on Friday. After some confusion, Phil Critelli's team won the race with 103 points, just beating out Hannah Holbrook's (114) and Brian Pellicano's (115) teams. The first boys across were Jake and Phil Critelli and Colin McCrory. The first girl across was Sara Greco, followed by Brittany Mendelson. Results are posted at the 2009 Race Results link (side of the page).
On Monday, after practice, we're going to put gravel down on the muddiest parts of the course. We need people and wheelbarrows. Coach Irvine and myself will supply rakes and shovels. If you are able to bring a wheelbarrow, we would be very happy.
Have a good weekend and see you on Monday.

Course Clean up and other things
We have only two weeks left until our first day of practice. Our first practice is on Monday, August 31 at 2:30 behind the cafeteria at PHS. We will be finished around 4:30.
On Monday, August 24, we will have our annual course clean up. Our cross country course includes a 1/2 mile path through the woods. It gets beat up over the course of the year and we need to fix it up. We will need to clear up brush and weeds, fill in holes, and fix our bridges. On the 24th, we'll meet at 9am behind the cafeteria at PHS. We need to supply our own material, so if you can bring any of the following, it will help with the clean up:
This week, we will be running on Tuesday and Thursday at the Audubon Park in South Britain at 6PM. On Saturday, we will run at the Bridle trail at 9AM. We are usually finished within 45 minutes to an hour. It is going to be hot, so bring plenty of fluids.
Directions to Audubon: Take route 172 in Southbury. At the South Britain General Store, turn onto East Flat Hill Rd. About 1/4 of a mile down the road on your left is the Audubon park. The parking lot is right by the entrance. (address for directions: 185 East Flat Hill Road, Southbury, CT 06488)
Directions to Bridle Trail: The entrance to the trail is just off of route 188 in Southford near the intersection with route 67. To get there from the High School, take route 188 south towards Oxford. About 2 miles down the road, you will pass a fire house on the left. Soon after that, there is the entrance to the trail on the left. It is next to a garage. You cannot park in the garage parking lot, but there is a small lot for the bridle trail. (coordinates for directions, I can't find an address: 41.467111,-73.16269)

August 11, 13, & 15 Runs
It is hard to believe that we are only three weeks away from our first practice. If you have been training since the beginning of July, you should be close to your maximum mileage for the summer. You should be running 5 to 6 days a week, including one long run (at least 45 minutes to 1 hour), strides 3 times a week, and core work 3 times a week. If you are just beginning to run, you should be aiming to complete three or four runs a week. Don't injure yourself by attempting to make up a summer's worth of running in three weeks.
For anybody who is interested, we'll be meeting on Tuesday and Thursday this week at the Audubon Park in South Britain at 6PM. With all the trails around, you can ran however far that you need to run. We are usually finished between 6:45 and 7:00.
On Saturday, we will be running at the Bridle Trail in Southford at 9AM. This is an out and back run, so you can turn around whenever you feel that you need to. We are usually finished between 9:45 and 10:00.

On a few other notes:
- Our first day of practice is Monday, August 31. We meet behind the cafeteria of the high school at 2:30. Practice should be over by 4:30.
- In order to practice you need three completed forms: a physical, a sports permission form, and a fall registration form. If you have been on the team, or signed up with the Athletic department, you should be receiving those by mail. If you haven't received them, they can be found at http://pomperaug.com/athletics/forms/index.htm.
- We will have a course clean up day sometime during the week of August 24. We will figure out an exact date later this week. The more people who show up, the better the course will be for the first day.

July 14 and July 16 Runs
I hope that all of you enjoyed your weekend. We are seven weeks away from the first day of practice. Hopefully you have begun some running. If you have just begun running, your goal should be to get out 2-3 times this week for runs. If you have been running for a couple of weeks, you should be increasing the amount running that you are doing. You can do this by adding more days that you run, or increasing the distance/time of your runs. You should also be doing core work 2 times a week. Core work would be things like pushups, planks, crunches, bicycles, 6 inches, etc. The types of core work that we do during the season.
In order to help you, some of us will be meeting both Tuesday and Thursday at the Audubon park in South Britain. We meet at 6PM and are usually done between 6:45 and 7:00. This is open to everybody, including people not on the cross country team. I hope to see you there.
